Welcome to wild domesticity
The name Wild Domestic encapsulates the two aspects of my food obsession. First, I crave a connection to my domestic foremothers. I'm in awe of all the food, medicine and clothing that women of the past routinely made. This domestic culture of production has largely suffered in our modern society. Many people now identify themselves by what and how they consume. More and more, my sense of fulfillment and identity comes from the things I'm able to create. The Wild represents the relationship I wish to cultivate with nature and animals. Just as domestic production in modern society has almost disappeared, so has a connection to the plants and animals that feed us. By gardening and foraging for a good amount of my food, I feel peace and a deep gratitude for the earth that feeds me. Human history has been a great exercise in modifying and controlling ecosystems. Though gardening certainly involves tweaking an ecosystem, I feel a steward of the plants and animals in my garden. My weeding, planting and composting become a part of the ecosystem and I feel more connected to food and its great history.
Wild Domestic chronicles my quest to live a life that is more sustainable and in line with my values. This means different things at different times. Depending on mood, season and free time, I'm canning, growing, cooking, knitting or otherwise creating. I hope to share the tips, tricks and habits gained from my obsessions and adventures.
Feel free to comment, correct and question in the comments. Trolls will be punished with a lifetime of sadness. Do not feed them.
